Medical Expert Witness: Shoulder and elbow specialist
I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a subspecialist interest in shoulder and elbow complaints. I hold a substantive position at one of the UK's leading NHS Trusts and I've spent the past decade providing expert evidence in both claimant and defendant Medico-legal cases.
I currently work from consulting venues in Liverpool and Manchester. If you would like me to provide a report for your next case, please do get in touch.
Current Practice
Your shoulder and elbow specialist
I've been a Consultant at The Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since September 2009.
While I undertake all aspects of routine shoulder surgery and most aspects of routine elbow surgery, I spend a significant amount of my time treating tertiary referral patients with complex conditions. This includes undertaking procedures practiced by just a few appropriately skilled surgeons. In fact, surgeons regularly visit our unit to view live shoulder replacement surgeries and learn up to date techniques, such as CT guided navigation.
I'm also the Shoulder & Elbow Lead for The Department of Trauma and Orthopaedics and hold a number of management responsibilities within that role, including managing the surgical service and overseeing all clinical negligence allegations for the entire Trauma & Orthopaedic Service.
Delivering claimant and defendant reports
Through my growing Medico-legal practice, I deliver reports for both claimant and defendant solicitors, dealing with cases relating to shoulder and elbow complaints.
I work in both the personal injury and clinical negligence arenas, and aim to provide fair, unbiased reports for the assistance of the court. Increasingly, instructions are relating to more complex and higher value cases.
Private practice: The Spire Liverpool Hospital
As an Associate Partner of The Bone & Joint Centre, I predominantly practice from the Spire Liverpool Hospital, where I see and treat both private and NHS patients. I aim to provide an exceptional and personal service to all patients
Since October 2019, I have sat on the hospital's Medical Advisory Committee, providing clinical advice on Orthopaedic & Trauma matters.
Sharing my expertise
I have actively participated in teaching throughout my career, regularly supporting medical students from Manchester and Liverpool Universities in the clinic, on the ward and in lecture-based sessions.
Since becoming a Consultant, my involvement in teaching has increased further. I have joined the faculty of a number of prestigious national courses and run a number of specialist shoulder courses often aimed at established consultants wanting to hone their skills.
In recent times, I've started teaching in the Medico-legal arena, delivering small, informal training sessions and larger lectures. I was even involved in creating the shoulder section of the MedCo accreditation course.

Notes for Instructing Solicitors
Solicitors instructions should be complete, and should contain an outline of the complaint
I have a subspecialty interest in shoulder and elbow surgery.
It is helpful to have a contact telephone number for the client, in case of late cancellation of the arranged appointment
Appointment times will be notified to clients directly whenever appropriate details are provided in letters of instruction
It is the referring solicitors' responsibility to ensure that the client attends at the instructed time and date. Defaulting from appointments will always result in a bill, unless a minimum of five working days' notice is received to telephone number 07872031053
If medical records are to be examined as part of the medical report, they must arrive in advance of the notified client appointment. Later arrival prevents incorporation of details into the report and will result in analysis in later letters.
Priority in correspondence is given to the preparation of reports, all other correspondence will be dealt with in date order received. This may result in delays in processing correspondence.
Medical reports are usually available within 6 weeks of the appointment date, but this time may be increased if an undue amount of correspondence (with associated court orders or pending limitation) is received that requires urgent processing.
Correspondence sent by a client directly to myself will be forwarded, unread, to the solicitor concerned.
